Description:
While development of the FAMAS rifle began in 1967 by Paul Tellie it wasn't until 1971 that the Industrial Group of Ground Based Armaments (GIAT, renamed NEXTER in 2006) was created to provide arms required by the French and foreign armies. Soon after, the french Military began evaluations of the rifle and in 19 it was accepted as standard issue for the Air Force, Navy, Gendarmerie and the Police in France.

The FAMAS replaced the MAS 46/56, the MAT 49 submachine gun and the MAC 29 machine gun after its adoption. The FAMAS has prove to be the only true ambidextrous rifle.
